Presidio San Saba

Filed under: Uncategorized — Becky @ 9:23 pm

In the next two weeks, I am off to the TAS field school in East Texas. I am excited about that fact that I get to participate as a crew chief, which does mean extra paperwork, but I don’t mind that part. My first field school with TAS was in 2004 at the Presidio San Saba, located in the cozy town of Menard, Texas. Since it was a fort, there was all kinds of interesting artifacts and material that we excavated. The following photos are of me in our 4×4 m excavation unit, digging up bones. Specifically, a horse mandible and other assorted remains.

The unit I am sitting in was started with picks and shovels, and I ended up working with paint brushes and bamboo skewers.

Off the Beaten Path

Years ago, I told my grandfather I would like to go back to school and study archaeology. He said “a degree in dirt is ok” and I took it to heart.

This year, I will finish my Masters in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Arlington, and of course, my focus, is in Archaeology.

It all began with my first volunteer work at the Clovis period Gault site in Central Texas. To me, and many others, there is nothing more fascinating then uncovering something that was made thousands of years ago and exhibits how people adapted or survived.
